Michael Kors Runway Watches by Case Size: 38, 42 and 45 mm
Runway, Slim Runway and Oversized Runway measure 38, 42 and 45 mm — the names do not tell you the size. Case diameter, water resistance and movement, from published specs.
Three watches in the Michael Kors outlet carry the Runway name, and none of the names indicates the size. One is a 38 mm case the brand calls mid-sized. One is a 42 mm case the brand calls oversized, sold as Slim Runway. One is a 45 mm case, also called oversized, sold as Oversized Runway. The collection name is marketing; the case diameter is the specification.
The name does not tell you the size
The published spec blocks:
- Runway Gold-Tone and Tortoiseshell Acetate Watch — 38 mm case, described as mid-sized
- Slim Runway Silver-Tone Watch — 42 mm case, described as oversized
- Oversized Runway Black-Tone Watch — 45 mm case, described as oversized
Two of the three are labelled oversized, and the word Slim sits on the middle one. A buyer who shops the name rather than the number has a coin flip’s chance of getting the size they expect — the trap the watch case diameter guide works through with other brands.
What the three diameters do on a wrist
The cases form a ladder with 3 to 4 mm between steps — visible on the wrist rather than marginal.
The 38 mm case is the only one that reads as a conventional dress-watch size: it sits under a shirt cuff without the case fighting the opening, and the only one of the three that passes a cuff on a smaller wrist without the bracelet riding over the hand bone.
The 42 mm case is the middle of the modern range, full-size without reading as a statement. On a smaller wrist it approaches the point where the lugs extend past the wrist’s flat top — the check to make before ordering.
The 45 mm case is the top of the ladder, sized for the chronograph layout: three sub-dials need dial real estate.
None of the pages publishes lug-to-lug or case thickness, so diameter is the only fit dimension available — enough to narrow, not to settle.
Water resistance is where the three part company
The 38 mm and 42 mm watches are both rated to 5 ATM, which the brand states as water resistant up to 50 metres: rain, splashes, hand washing. It is not a swimming rating, and it is the most over-read number on a fashion watch.
The 45 mm is rated to 10 ATM — up to 100 metres, the depth the brand describes as covering bathing, swimming and snorkelling. If the watch is going in the water, it is the only one of the three built for it, and the difference has nothing to do with case diameter.
Two three-hand movements and one chronograph
The 38 mm and 42 mm watches run quartz three-hand movements — hours, minutes, seconds, no complications. The 45 mm runs a quartz chronograph with sub-dials and a date window, a busier dial and the reason the case is 45 mm. Both are quartz, so neither needs winding.
The three watches
Runway Gold-Tone and Tortoiseshell Acetate Watch is the 38 mm option, in stainless steel and acetate with gold-tone hardware, a quartz three-hand movement and a 5 ATM rating. Slim Runway Silver-Tone Watch is the 42 mm option, in stainless steel with silver-tone hardware, a quartz three-hand movement and the same 5 ATM rating, listed at USD 159 on the US site at the time of writing. Oversized Runway Black-Tone Watch is the 45 mm option, in black-tone stainless steel with a quartz chronograph movement and a 10 ATM rating, listed at USD 139 on the US site at the time of writing.
If the rest of the jewellery is silver, the 38 mm needs a second thought — the guide to matching metals in an outfit covers the trade-off.

The check before ordering
Measure the wrist, then compare the diameter against the case size guide rather than the collection name. Then answer the water question honestly: if the watch comes off before the pool, 5 ATM is plenty; if it stays on, the 45 mm is the only one rated for it.
The picks
Runway Gold-Tone and Tortoiseshell Acetate Watch
Best for a smaller wristThe 38 mm case is the only one of the three the brand labels mid-sized rather than oversized, and the only one that reads as a conventional dress-watch size under a shirt cuff. Stainless steel and tortoiseshell acetate with gold-tone hardware, a quartz three-hand movement, clasp fastening and a 5 ATM rating that covers rain and splashes but not swimming.
What works
- — 38 mm case is the only mid-sized label in the Runway set
- — Three-hand dial is the cleanest read at a glance
- — Gold-tone with tortoiseshell acetate is distinct from the metal-only pair
What doesn't
- — 5 ATM rating is not a swimming rating
- — Gold-tone hardware needs a second thought next to silver jewellery
- — No complications beyond hours, minutes and seconds
Slim Runway Silver-Tone Watch
Best for the conventional rangeA 42 mm stainless steel case the same page labels oversized, with silver-tone hardware, a quartz three-hand movement and a 5 ATM rating. Listed at USD 159 on the brand's US site at the time of writing, it is the middle of the ladder: full-size without reading as a statement, and the size most bracelets are cut for. The name says Slim; the spec block says oversized.
What works
- — 42 mm case sits in the conventional modern range
- — Silver-tone hardware matches silver jewellery without a trade-off
- — Listed at USD 159, the mid price of the three
What doesn't
- — 42 mm approaches lug overhang on smaller wrists
- — 5 ATM rating is not a swimming rating
- — Name and published size label disagree
Oversized Runway Black-Tone Watch
Best for waterA 45 mm black-tone stainless steel case with a quartz chronograph movement, sub-dials and a date window, and the only one of the three rated to 10 ATM — the depth the brand describes as covering bathing, swimming and snorkelling. Listed at USD 139 on the brand's US site at the time of writing. The case is sized for the chronograph layout, not the other way around.
What works
- — 10 ATM rating is the only swim-depth rating in the set
- — Chronograph sub-dials add function, not just dial furniture
- — Listed at USD 139, the lowest of the three
What doesn't
- — 45 mm case is a statement size on smaller wrists
- — Chronograph dial is busier to read at a glance
- — Black-tone finish shows wear differently from polished steel

FAQ
- Which Runway fits a smaller wrist?
- The 38 mm Runway is the smallest of the three and the only one the brand labels mid-sized rather than oversized. None of the three pages publishes lug-to-lug, so diameter alone is not the whole fit picture — measure the wrist and check it against the diameter guidance in the case size guide before ordering.
- Can you swim with the 42 mm Slim Runway?
- No. It is rated to 5 ATM, which covers rain, splashes and hand washing but is not a swimming rating. The 45 mm Oversized Runway, rated to 10 ATM, is the only one of the three the brand describes as swim-depth.
- Why does the 42 mm watch say Slim in its name?
- The product name is marketing copy; the spec block on the same page labels the 42 mm case oversized. The name and the published size descriptor disagree, which is the reason to read the case diameter rather than the collection name.
